AFTER DARK FOOD CRAWL
THE Quintessential HONG KONG EXPERIENCE
Tired of touristy crowds? Join us on the dark side on our immersive food crawl, and explore the vibrant (yet still very much rustic) neighborhoods of Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po.
1st Stop: A Taste of Nostalgia in Mong Kok
We’ll kick things off in the bustling heart of Mong Kok at Ashley’s favorite childhood bakery, a family-run gem that’s been delighting locals for over 30 years. Here, you’ll sample an assortment of traditional treats like sticky rice pancakes with red beans and walnut cookies, all lovingly made using the same recipes for decades.
2nd Stop: A Classic Cantonese Diner Experience
Next, we’ll visit a quintessential Cantonese diner, where you’ll indulge in iconic Hong Kong staples such as Hong Kong milk tea, Hong Kong-style French toast, egg tart and a secret local specialty drink that’s rarely known outside the city.
3rd Stop: Wet Market Delights
It’s not a proper Hong Kong food crawl without checking out the local market! Learn about fresh produce and the different type of condiments we use in Cantonese cooking. You’ll also have the chance to buy some sauces home with you too!
From Mong Kok, we’ll head to Sham Shui Po, a neighborhood steeped in history and culture. Known to some as Hong Kong’s answer to Brooklyn, locals see it as a living embodiment of the city's soul, filled with authentic charm and nostalgia.
4th Stop: Dumplings Done Right
At our next stop, you'll step into a humble mum-and-pop dumpling shop, renowned for its freshly made steamed and pan-fried dumplings. Watch the owners work their magic behind the scenes, wrapping dumplings with lightning speed and precision.
5th Stop: Herbal Tea and Hidden Traditions
Our fourth stop takes us to an old-school herbal tea shop that has been a local fixture for over 40 years. You'll learn about how locals use herbal tea and Chinese medicinal turtle jello as a folk remedy in Hong Kong, while immersing in a neon-filled herbal tea cafe.
6th Stop: Dai Pai Dong Feast
We’re off to some of the best highlights of the food crawl: a feast at one of the city's last remaining dai pai dongs. These iconic open-air restaurants bring the energy of street-side cooking to life, with chefs whipping up classic Cantonese dishes in view of diners. Enjoy an array of mouthwatering stir-fry dishes like clams in black bean sauce, salt-and-pepper calamari, stir-fried veggies with Cantonese cured meat, lemon chicken, and more (menu items may vary based on your preferences). Whether seated indoors or outdoors, this experience is quintessential Hong Kong.
